Individuals are expected to complete all academic/degree requirements necessary for graduation at Appalachian State University, regardless of disability.
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as ammended and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as ammended, the university must provide eligible students with reasonable accommodations for disabilities. However, the university is not required to provide accommodations that would fundamentally alter the degree requirements of a particular program.
Upon receipt of a request for a course substitution/waiver, ODR will make preliminary eligibility determination based on supporting documentation of a substantially limiting disability. If a student is determined to be eligible for reasonable accommodations, a review committee will be established and will consist of the director of ODR, the department chair of the course/degree requirement, the course professor, and any other professional deemed appropriate by the review committee.
